AI is no longer a research area reserved for mathematics and computer science. Lords of Legacy is taking place in the smart studio – a project in which practice (programming) and theory (improvement) are tools for generating new knowledge of and new insights into artificial intelligence. This project will result in an exhibition at Art Node in September 2001.
The metaphor of the brain as a computer is becoming more and more common as a result of the increasing importance of computers in our society. How can we think of intelligence as anything over and above the product of the ultimate system? How do objects which we perceive as intelligent act? What alternative ways are there of thinking about and contemplating AI? How can we create objects which are perceived as intelligent in different ways, not because they interact rationally, but irrationally?

Lords of Legacy is an attempt to find alternative routes to the concept of the intelligent object, be it virtual or actual. Do the terms irrational and logical have to be considered to be opposites? Is the bipolar thought model a prerequisite for both machines and the human brain? This project will focus on another, undefined way of regarding man and technology, a new way of creating reality. The ideological starting point of this project is dysfunction, disharmony, the breaks. It is here we will find the answers to our questions. It is through discontinuity that we can create understanding. This is the basis for the discussion taking part within this project.
If the brain is not a computer, what is it? We want to investigate the symbolic value of AI. What values and ideologies control its development? What does the development of “intelligent” machines tell us about our self-perception?
Lords of Legacy consists of a number of projects. These projects will be implemented in 2001 and presented at the exhibition at Art Node in September together with an environment. All together this will visualise the basic ideas of Lords of Legacy.

Examples of projects:
Hell Hunt: A paranoid web looking for images on the Internet.
Emma Tele: Call and talk to the virtual woman looking for softness .
Whispers: Virtual objects interpret specific texts on the basis of their own parameters.
Dead End: A self-generating film on survival in the virtual world.
Dreamers: A project on distributed creativity based on gaps in memory.
