responsive field at Centre Pompidou
Galerie sud, Centre Pompidou, Paris, 10 Dec. 2003 - 1 Mar. 2004
contact: Fredrik Petersson | related: lattice archipelogics

The Smart Studio and Servo participate in the exhibition Non Standard Architectures at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. The exhibited piece is Lattice Archipelogics, an installation designed by servo where the Smart Studio made the interactive aspects, which we call the responsive field.

The installation consists of a system of modules with embedded light sources and a sensory system. The vistors' movements through the space affect a number of digital agents who in turn control the light in the modules.

Lattice Archipelogics has previously been shown at the Latent Utopias exhibition in Austria and at the servo effervescence exhibition in Los Angeles. The piece was awarded an honorary mention in Vida 5.0 art and a-life competition in Madrid.

Dendritic Growth
Vinterviken, Stockholm, 30 Aug. 2003

pattern formation through electro-deposition.

This workshop was held in the context of an art & science project Complexity and Transformation initiated by Cheryl Akner-Koler with the support of The Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet). Arijana Kajfes has collaborated with Pablo Miranda in exploring electrochemical processes that produce complex growth patterns.

The device was originally developed already in the late fifties by Gordon Pask. ''Pask?s devices have far-reaching implications for artificial intelligence, self-constructing devices, theories of observers and epistemically-autonomous agents, theories of functional emergence, machine creativity, and the limits of contemporary machine learning paradigms.'' [Peter Cariani 1993]

From zippers and baby seats to mobile telephony and satellite navigation systems! Among these Swedish innovations Brainball will be displayed in Latin America in October. Improving Life is produced by Svensk Form (The Swedish Society of Crafts and Design) in collaboration with Svenska institutet, Utrikesdepartementet, and Exportrådet. It has been created based the Kjell Sedig's book Svenska innovationer (Svenska institutets förlag, 2002).
