Dendritic Growth at Complexity and Transformation

The Dendritic Growth project will be one of the topics for the complexity and transformation series of public seminars, on 17 Nov. 2005. There is also an exhibition that opens on 10 Nov.

Arijana Kajfes and Pablo Miranda have been collaborating on a project called Dendritic Growth . In this piece, inspired by the works of Gordon Pask in the fifties, the readings from a set of light sensors influence the operation of an electrochemical device. An electrolytic process will cause copper to deposit in a self-reinforcing system, leading to emergent branching structures (dendrites).

The dendritic growth was shown as part of Arijana Kajfes' larger project Occular Witness. The exploration of processes that generate forms and structures (morphogenesis) is typical of the work of Pablo Miranda.

Complexity and Transformation (from invitation):

“Complexity and Transformation is a cross-disciplinary project that has received three years funding by the Swedish Research Council. We have chosen to summarize the project in the form of an exhibition/performance. The aim of the project has been to bring together representatives from art, physics, design and architecture to explore complex phenomena where perception and aesthetics play a central role. In the exhibition we present a selection of concrete laboratory exercises, film clips from video documentation during workshops as well as recorded interviews that give insight into the individual interpretations from the project participants. Parallel with the exhibition there is a seminar series with lectures and open discussions.”
